Q. Are there similar notebook computer initiatives on other campuses? A. A: Mayville State University is now one of a small group of universities that provide the same model of notebook computer to all students. The University of Minnesota-Crookston was the first higher education institution to implement a universal notebook computer initiative in the fall semester 1993. During the 1996-97 academic year, Valley City State University, ND and Waldorf College, IA became the second and third campuses to distribute notebooks computers to all students. Floyd and Clayton Colleges in Georgia initiated a similar project the fall of 1997. Many other colleges and universities are working with pilot programs of student volunteers or are requiring notebook use in a specific major or academic program. Some campuses are phasing in notebook use with first year students and intend to achieve universal access by the year 2000. Wake Forest University, NC is probably the best known institution following this latter model. Return to FAQ Contents |
