Frequently Asked Questions about Notebook Computers at Mayville State University.

Q. Should the student insure their notebook computer for accidental damage or loss?

A. Yes. Insurance to protect against accidental damage or loss is the responsibility of the student. The most inexpensive way to insure your notebook computer is to have it added to your parent's homeowners insurance policy or get your own renter's insurance policy if you no longer qualify under your parent's policy. Telling your insurance agent to cover the note book computer is not enough. You must ask your insurance agent to "schedule" or "itemize" your notebook computer. "Scheduling" means you list the item specifically on your policy, and list a value. If damage occurs, you will be given much broader protection for the scheduled items than you will for your other property. You will be protected from unusual losses like damage from a spilled beverage, or from dropping your computer. Without scheduling, no losses would be compensated. Therefore, "Scheduling" the notebook computer will give you much greater protection. This coverage is inexpensive and can save you the frustration of paying for a replacement computer due to damage from a beverage spill, dropped computer, or other common cause of loss not normally protected by insurance.
