Research- Media use of place. "My main research effort is focused upon exposure of how the media, especially television, uses place information in the development of characters and plots. Given the high levels of time Americans spend with television and other media, the nature of the images presented is seen as having an important impact on what people know about places."
- Geography of Women in North Dakota. "A current focus in my work is to develop a clear view of the spatial patterns behind women's issues in North Dakota. The changing social and economic picture in the state must be creating dynamic impacts on women and their world."
- Political Culture. "My political research is focused upon the nature of political culture, especially as it impacts state politics. Of particular interest is the east versus west political division in North Dakota, and its cultural basis.

Personal MattersMeartz is a known Green Bay Packers fan and person of the lakes and woods. It is also known that his favorite television show is "Good Neighbors" from British TV. This show celebrates self-sufficiency and the rejection of material society. This may explain, to some degree, why Meartz holds the record for voting no at consecutive faculty meetings. He listens to the classics (favoring Wagner, Puccini, and other "power classics"), Broadway, Classic Rock (from his days as a guitar player in a garage band called The Peaceseekers), and New Country (though continuing rumors that he plans to become Elvis have been denied by all official sources). His top movie lineup centers on Mr. Roberts, The Student Prince, Casablanca, Peyton Place, A Summer Place, South Pacific, In Harm's Way, and Where the Boys Are (the one with Paula Prentiss and Delores Hart). His recent pursuits have been The Student Prince, the films of Nelson Eddy, Jeanette MacDonald, and Deanna Durbin, and careful examination of the beach movies of the 1960s. Meartz maintains his personal web pages at Meartz Off-shore.
